Sports management, as one of the main pillars of organizing international sports events, has a high potential to promote environmental sustainability. This research aims to analyze the role of sports management in reducing the environmental impacts of large-scale events such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup. The research method is based on a qualitative approach and a case study that uses secondary data, official reports of international sports organizations, and scientific articles. Two international sports events, namely the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and the 2022 Qatar World Cup, have been selected as case studies to examine sustainability measures in them. The findings show that sports management can significantly reduce negative environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions and waste generation through green infrastructure design, optimal waste management, use of renewable energy, and strengthening public awareness. However, challenges such as the high costs of implementing sustainable projects, lack of coordination between organizations, and lack of commitment from some stakeholders are serious obstacles in this direction. This article suggests that international sports organizations strengthen environmental sustainability by developing binding policies, allocating special funds for green projects, and training sports managers. In addition, international cooperation and exchange of successful experiences can help improve performance in this area. Finally, this research emphasizes the need to integrate sustainability into all aspects of sports management and provides a framework for improving environmental performance in future sports events.
